Are pre-paid cell phones the best options when traveling from US to Canada for about a week?

There are 25 of us going for about a week. We want to stay in touch with each other in case we get lost or need directions etc. I know Cingular and Sprint charge about 60 cents a minute if we use our regular phones there. I’m not sure how many minutes we’ll use, so in case we might use a lot, what’s the cheapest I could get a pre-paid phone for there? Any recommendations?

First of all Sprint / AT&T rates are 60c for long distance calling. But the one who receives a call with a US phone while in Canada will pay much more as he/she is paying for roaming+long distance.

Honestly, there is no cheaper alternative unless all 25 of you have unlocked phones which can accept SIM card / cash card of any other service provider. Which would otherwise mean buying new phones. Calling rates on short term services are quite steep and you will realize that the saving per min. is not that much.

When its a matter of just a week, your best bet will be to continue with your same phones and keep your use to reasonable minimum.

I have a low 400 mark, I talked to some one that did auto financing for 14 years and this is what he told me. He said move about to a reputable big dealership that offers “special financing.” He said bring proof of income and that surrounded by over 14 years he was never competent to not finance someone if they have a large plenty down payment. I have Cingular as my service provider and my text messages are starting to cost a fortune even with their best plan. My question, is there anyway to just cancel text messaging altogether so you can’t receive them? No matter how many times I tell people to stop they constantly send them and sometimes the messages gets resent like 3 times. And its friggen 15 cents a pop now and it adds up real quickly.

Yes, you can disable text messaging… Punch up 611 on your phone. Tell them you no longer want to get text message of ANY kind. They may try to sell you another plan (they are sales people afterall), but decline.

I did this to avoid the charges. It works. The only mesages you will get at this point will be the ones you request – such as *646 to get your minute ballance, etc.
