How is working as a sales consultant for ATT / Cingular or Verizon Wireless?

I applied online on Monday, attended an 'event recruitment and was offered a job as a sales consultant for ATT / Cingular. It pays $ 12/hour Principals plus commission. I'm 18 and in college starting, and seems a little too good to be true. I want to major in business and feel could be an excellent salesperson, but I read that you must comply a certain sales quota. Is it easy to do or could easily be fired? I also received a call from Verizon today, trying to create an interview. Does anyone in either of these stores? I'm just worried because it seems that I was hired too fast and the interview took place at an event ATT of recruiting in a conference room at a hotel in Nice. There were enough people and I wonder why they are hiring many people. Could someone please tell me what the catch is this?

I was with Cingular-AT & T, the pressure is brutal … They have huge billing problems and that make a representative Retail sales help a customer crazy with their own issues instead of selling.
